Death of HGA Founder Member
A Director and founder member of the Houston/Grampian Association, Mr Alastair Campbell died at his home in Houston on 4 March 2006.
He and his wife Betsy were members of the first Houston delegation to visit Grampian for the signing of the official twinning charter in May, 1979.
Born in Glasgow in 1931, Al Campbell qualified in marine engineering and worked for the Cunard Steamship Company for six years before settling in 1957 in the U.S., first in Ohio where he was married in 1959 and later in Houston where he worked latterly for the Bently Nevada Corporation as senior alignment specialist in machinery diagnostic services.
A keen piper, Al was a past Pipe Major of the Houston Highlanders and acted as Piper to the Houston/Grampian Association. He is pictured here playing for pupils at Crockett Elementary School, Houston, as part of their Scottish studies in connection with the Children’s Day Parade at the Houston International Festival.
