DEATH OF MARY METZ M.B.E.


Mary Metz, who died on August 6, 2024 – the day after her 100th birthday – made a major contribution to the Sister City relationship between Houston and Grampian Region.

She was made Life Chairman of the Houston-Grampian Association after serving as President and also as co-ordinator of the student nursing exchange between Houston Baptist University and Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen

Her proudest moment came in 2002 when she was made a Member of the British Empire (M.B.E) by Her Majesty The Queen at Buckingham Palace for services to Scottish -Texas cultural and business links through her work for the Houston-Grampian Association.

Mary was born in London, on August 5th 1924 and married an American serviceman, the late James E Metz in September, 1944. They moved to Jim's home in Texas in 1946 and for many years Mary worked for Trunkline Gas/Panhandle Eastern in Houston.

She was a volunteer worker at Grace Presbyterian Church for 32 years and then became a choir member at St Martin’s Episcopal Church. For 60 years she was a performing member of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society in Houston.

Grampian-Houston Association secretary Bill Neish said, “Mary was held in high regard by her many friends on both sides of the Atlantic.”
